HISTORY & BELIEFS

Moungo Division, a significant southwestern Cameroonian mountain area known for its mild climate and fertile volcanic soils, has been a hub of economic activity since colonial times despite being 150 miles from the coast. With Nkongsamba as its capital, this region attracted colonial and religious investments, quickly rising to prominence as Cameroon's third-largest city, following the political capital Yaoundé and the economic hub Douala.

Moungo Division thrived on agriculture, exporting coffee, bananas, and tropical fruits while supplying the country with corn, sweet potatoes, cassava, and plantains. Its importance led to the first north-south railway line through Nkongsamba, vital for transporting food to the north.

Nkongsamba evolved into an educational center, with schools established by religious organizations and others, amid a growing immigrant population. However, in the mid-1960s and 1970s, as Nkongsamba engaged in Cameroon's political independence struggles, it fell out of favor with Yaoundé. The military's increasing presence led to a decline, with industries and farms abandoned and infrastructure deteriorating.

Today, Nkongsamba and Moungo Division, still rich in potential, are shadows of their former selves. The resilience of the youth, facing a challenging destiny they did not choose, is a poignant reminder of our duty to harness regional resources for the betterment of its people.
